“The Power of an Old Idea”
Dillard Smith Construction Company was founded in 1947 by William Dillard Smith.

During the post-World War II era, there were plenty of work opportunities available; however, Mr. Smith was faced with many challenges – shortages of manpower and difficulty in acquiring equipment to perform the projects. In fact, the only piece of equipment he had available in the beginning was a used pick-up truck. At other times, he utilized mules as equipment to complete projects.

Much has changed since the beginning days of Dillard Smith Construction Company. The equipment is more sophisticated and those working with it are more specialized, but the success of the company lies in the values in which it was formed:

• Treat every employee as a customer and every customer as a friend.
• Invest in training because training is knowledge, and knowledge is power.
• Realize that our employees are our most valuable assets. That’s why at Dillard Smith Construction Company, safety is not just a goal - it is a mindset.
• Develop pride and a sense of responsibility in the community by supporting community-based activities and charities.

Since the beginning days, there have been many advances in the industry and changes in the services that the company is able to provide. Initially, most of the work consisted of construction and maintenance of distribution systems for municipalities and electric utility companies. Today, the company offers a wide range of services including transmission construction and maintenance; installation and maintenance of substations, fiber optics and communication towers for cellular, satellite, and cable networks; meter reading; outdoor lighting, traffic signals, and emergency storm restoration.
